There’s No Smoke and That Stupid Smoke Detector is Chirping and Chirping and Chirping

November 5, 2013
Gorgeous Skies at Three-Forty Five P.M.

I have decided to participate in the National Blog Post Month for November.  That means I am going to be writing each day of November,

I’m cutting this one close.  It’s 11:30 p.m.
The battery on one of our smoke detectors must be going because it has been making noise all day long.  Ross changed the battery, but it continued to make that tortuous chirp every 45 seconds.
He tried changing the batteries in the other three units but this did not stop the alerts.  He went out and bought new batteries.  He once again replaced all the batteries with brand new ones which have expiration dates of 2018.   No luck.
Apparently all four somehow talk to each other and have to be in sync.  And apparently, there is a particular sequence that has to be followed in this line of communication.  We have not been able to break the code.
We have come to the conclusion that one of the units is broken.  At 4:00 p.m. he called six electricians, and got the answering machine from all of them.  At 5:30 one of the guys called back.  Actually his wife called and said that her husband would not be able to get out to us until Thursday.
We couldn’t figure out how to disconnect the stupid things.
The current status is the original offender has stopped making noise.  That’s the one in the hallway, by the front door, outside of the spare bedroom.   Now, the detector in the master bedroom is chirping.
I cannot sleep through that.  Ross says he can.
I’m camping out in the spare room tonight.  Right now I have the TV on to help drown out that annoying beep.  The TV is an old fashioned tube thing.  It only gets a few channels.  I’m resigned to watching Murder She Wrote - Jessica Fletcher.
After I post this, I’ll turn off the TV, after I find out who done it, that is, turn out the light, put my iPod  headphones on and listen to a book.
Whew it’s 11:49.  Made it.
Good Night all!

  1. I can't tell you how many times I've posted between 11:55pm and 11:59pm during these month-long challenges. I hope your alarms get sorted soon.

  2. Oh good, so I'm not the only one who waits until the last possible minute. I'm up early this morning and the chirping continues, urgh!

  3. Stupid until the need is real. That chirping is annoying to the point I thought I'd shoot mine. Hubby got home in the nick of time that day. Here's a one-upmanship for you... We have NINE all wired together, and this includes two in the attic. When one goes off, they ALL go off. I try very hard not to burn the toast any more. I don't make toast. :)

How's The New Place?

Sunday, August 4, 2024 "How's the new place?" they ask.  Some might wonder how I could  not  love the "new place".   After all it's cute, right?  Reminiscent of a little New England style cottage.  Everyone who visits always comments on how cozy the "new place" feels.  "It's low maintenance, gated security, plenty of activities available and clubs to join," they say.  I am trying to love the "new place".  I've dressed it up with curtains and carpets.  I'm in the process of giving the kitchen a face lift with shiny new cabinets.  I've hung Ross' prized artwork and displayed his precious thrift store finds.   All of the furniture here in the "new place" is the furniture I brought with me from our old place.  I've re-arranged the living room a hundred times. I placed the "Big Toe" flower pot, the one that always made us smile, under the front yard tree and had the landscaping redone. Bu...
The Two Beds The Two Beds Tuesday, February 7, 2023   It’s early, 5:31 a.m. to be exact and still very dark. Shadows of light streaming in from night-lights streak the walls.   Lying in the middle of the Big Bed, I’m tired but wide awake.  Ross is peacefully sleeping in the bed next to me. It's a narrow bed with cold chrome metal rails. I can hear his quiet breathing, in and out, in and out.   I am thinking of the last time we were together in the Big Bed.  It too was early morning, a few weeks ago. twenty-six days to be exact.     I was snuggled up to him, my arms across his thin bony chest.    I painfully recall that I was softly crying, murmuring  a lot of “I’m sorries”.   “I’m sorry I got angry,” I whispered.    “It’s just that I’m tired, so tired.”    "I'm so sorry."  All that week Ross had been particularly restless during the day but even more so at night.   That night I woke in...

Reflections - A to Z Blogging Challenge

Blogging from A to Z Challenge April 2015 Last month I participated in the “ Blogging from A-Z Challenge ” What was it? I blogged everyday beginning on April first with a topic themed on something with the letter A , then on April second another topic with the letter  B  as the theme, and so on and finished on April thirtieth with the theme based on the letter  Z .   The theme of the day was the letter scheduled for that day. My theme was short fictional (well mostly fictional) stories about women.  Each woman’s name began with the appropriate letter of the alphabet for that day. Today ’s post is a reflection of my experience with the A-Z challenge. I have participated in this challenged since 2012.  So this was my fourth time. This year, as in years past,  instead of having all 26 posts written ahead of time,  I wrote my posts just one or two days before the specified letter day. Doing it this way provided me with...
