A-Z Challenge R is for Turn Turn Turn

It’s time to participate in the April A-Z Blog Challenge.  I will be blogging every day in April, with Sunday’s off.
The topic for each day will begin with the designated letter of the alphabet.
This Monday’s letter is R.

Once we would take to the road spontaneously.   We would start out early in the day.   Our route was never planned.  Oh, we would always begin the journey the same way because there was only one way out.  Turn right, then right again.  Make a left.  This led us onto a long and winding highway.
After that we had many decisions and lots of choices.
There was the day that we wondered where that bumpy country lane would lead us.  To our delight we found an old flea market.  It appeared to be abandoned.
Large old tin signs, heavy on a tilted pole,  creaked in the wind.  They told us when to come, where to park and that there would be food.

There were rows of faded pink, blue and yellow shaker shacks.  In front of each cottage sat empty tables covered with colorful cloths, perhaps waiting to once again display newly found discarded treasures.

As we slowly made our way down each dusty alleyway we caught glimpses of skinny turkeys running wild in between the buildings.

We joked that the next time we were in the market for big old truck tires, or a beach bike, we would come back Wednesday - Sunday.

Yes, we took to the road quite often then.   We stumbled into a sugar shack and had quite a tasty lunch  at  Noma’s cafe.

But that was once.  Now we have Sophie.  She never lets us go off roading.  She certainly is a stern taskmaster.   Frankly, I think our lives have dulled because of her constant nagging...Re-Routing!

Why not check out some of the other 2033 participants in the April 2014 A-Z Blog

  1. I love this piece! Great writing. I felt like I wanted to be where you were. We have Sophie's cousin, Daphne. :-)

    1. Thank you. To tell you the truth our Sophie has eliminated most of the conflict between driver and navigator.

  2. What cool discoveries. I used to do a lot of road meandering like that--it was my favorite pastime. Now not so much. Gas is too expensive and I'm stuck in the midst of large metropolitan area. Driving crowded streets is not all that much fun. These days when I'm going somewhere I'm usually on a schedule and in too much of a hurry to meander. I flip on the GPS system and let the auto voice tell me when to turn.

This was my kind of story. Good stuff!

    1. Thank you Lee. I’m happy that you enjoyed my post. We don’t know how we existed before our GPS.

  3. Oh, but meandering can be fun. So long as you don't have to be someplace by a certain time. (Being late is never fun.)

    1. We did love meandering. We actually still do it, but not as often.

  4. Sounds like a wonderful road trip off the beatn patch! Maybe you can turn Sophie off while exploring and turn her back on when you are ready to rejoin civilization. We have Lola; who replaces Stella :)

    1. That’s true, we should occasionally turn Sophie off. She always knows the way home.

  5. Now that we're retired, we're not in a hurry and can take the back roads. This summer we're going on a long road trip. We're taking the RV. If we get lost we'll have everything we need to survive.

    1. That sounds like quite a trip. I’ve never travelled that way. We joke about selling everything someday, getting one and just take off.

  6. I think I ended up married to the person I did in part because we both loved to do this. We never went on traditional "dates" of any kind and instead hopped in the car and just drove all over New England, having long and winding conversations to match our long and winding trips. Fairly early on in our marriage, we had to give that habit up--schedules, finances, squabbling children all got in the way. But...we're looking forward to getting back to it now that the kids are grown-ish. :)
