I was Shantel, Shawntelly, etc and the main issues with Kalkbrenner were that people really, really, really wanted to add an extra syllable (as though it weren't already long enough) so most often it was "Kalkenbrenner." I always joke that one of the top five reasons I married my husband was that his last name was only five letters long.

My father's long-time girlfriend's name is Lynda with a "Y" and she went through a phase in her late twenties and early thirties where she spelled it with an "I" just because it was easier.
